Read the short excerpt about the Baule (bah.oo.lay) people of Ghana. This short tells describes the sacrifice which is the origin of the group's name. The name Baule comes from the word baouli means “the child has died.”
For the blog, record a story or tradition from your culture or from others that has something in common with the tale. Do NOT repeat any of the comments. Try to choose something that is unique.
This comes from Ashanti to Zulu: African Traditions by Margaret Musgrove
To the Baule, a crocodile holding a big fish in its mouth is a sacred symbol. A Baule legend tells of a war with the Ashanti (uh.shahnt.ee), another tribe in Ghana. The Ashanti had chased the Baule to a deep river. There was no bridge, so the Baule asked the crocodiles to help them across. The crocodiles agreed, but in return they demanded the most precious thing the Baule people had. Tearfully the queen gave them her only son. Then the crocodiles lined up side by side in the water, and the Baule walked across their backs to safety.
"Between the Ears" is a blog for Mrs. Calhoun's Arts and Humanities class. Why "Between the Ears?" Between the ears refers to your brain; the part of you that matters and represents you. Each of us have something of value to share.
Quote of the Week
Drawing is the honesty of art. To draw does not mean simply to reproduce contours: drawing does not consist merely of line. Drawing is also expression, the inner form, the plane and modeling. See what remains after that. Drawing includes three and a half quarters of the content of painting. -- Jean Auguste Ingres Quote

I read this story and I thought about Rumpelstiltskin and how he was willing to help the Miller's daughter spin straw into gold but only in exchange for something in return. At first it was trinkets, rings and bracelets and then finally he asked the girl for her unborn child. Later he demanded that the "contract" be fulfilled.

ReplyDeleteWhen Eli Estrada found $140,000 in unmarked bills sitting in the middle of the road, he thought he was rich. “That’s just your first reaction,” Estrada tells the Los Angeles Times, “but it’s not yours, and you feel nervous… like you did something wrong.” So the 40-year-old landscaper, deep in debt and supporting his mother, took the money directly to police.
Authorities were flabbergasted. “I've had people come to me with purses and wallets with cash in it and they'll turn it in,” said a police spokesman. “But not like this.” Estrada didn’t even ask for a reward, though the bank that lost the money eventually gave him $2,000. “They should have given him 10%,” says his mother

ReplyDeleteWhen I read this story I thought about the story "Bobby the Mountain Climber" where Bobby has to sacrifice the beautiful view of the mountains with bad glasses to reach the top of the mountain because he is discouraged by the sight of the big mountains.
ReplyDeleteI searched for a story and came up with the bible story about Abraham being asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac. God asked Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son. Abraham was going to do so to obey God. In the end, he didn't have to, but the message is still the same.

ReplyDeleteI found this story called sacrifice
ReplyDeleteit is about a boy and his brother was in a car wreak and the brother had no clue what was going on and now he wants to know how long he has until he dies.
it reminds me of a time when a friend of mine saw a wallet on the ground and couldn't find the rightful owner of it and so he put up posters and finally found the right owner and he got a $100 reward for it
ReplyDeleteIn Harry Potter, there was a story called "The Tale of the Three Brothers"
ReplyDeleteIt's where 3 brothers were trying to cross a bridge to get to the other side. But "death" was in their way and wouldn't let them through. So in short, the brothers had made a bargain, or trade, with death. Two of the three brothers ended up being killed because of the bargain they made with death. The third brother however, gave his bargain along to his son, and then the brother ended up dying happily so his son could go through life happily as he once had.
A story that it reminded me of was, "King of Goodness The Great", It is about a King in India who realizes he must do what right for his people, even if it hurts him in the end. It shows how he believes the greatness of being kind and giving will overcome any obstacle.
ReplyDeleteit shows me that sometimes you have to give up something of worth to obtain something else
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of the movie Seven pounds. In seven Pounds starring Will Smith he gives mire then he receives. he sacrifices his resources to help others in need. The story shows that you have to give up some things in life for happiness.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this I thought of how in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (nerd moment), Harry had to give up the sword of Gryffindor for the goblin to help him get into Gringotts.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to make sacrifices to get something you need.
This reminds me of a couple of Biblical movies. It made me think of sacrifice. Like how Jesus gave his life for us...
ReplyDeleteIt reminded me of when i found $60 bucks at wall-mart and went to the help place they have and the person who lost the money came and told me i could keep it.
ReplyDeleteit reminds me of the will smith movie the pursuit of happiness were he gives up everything just to stay with his son
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of the movie tangled. When the girl with long magical blonde hair that lights up whenever she sings, which everyone wants to have, falls in love with the most wanted man in the region. They fall in love, but then he is about to die, they go to kiss one more time and he cuts off her hair.
ReplyDeleteit shows me that sometimes you have to give up something, to get something else
ReplyDeletethere is this movie i seen that will smith give up body parts to people he thought deserved it. he ended up dying from jellyfish and gave up his heart to this girl and his eyes to this blind man.
ReplyDeleteWhen i read this story it's amazing because the beule wants to cross to the bridge and the crocodile helps him to cross to their back. This story is something that people help and sacrifice.
ReplyDeletei have a story that this people are working a writing a song that gives them a good group and work too.they just need to realize that one of the most things they need is help and be prepared for the things could they finished.
in the story the girls have a helpfulness she help when people need help but she does not have power she have a little money and she give to the poor people all most and she does not have more money but she try to find the money in many way and she have a work and she have more money and she always wants to help people
ReplyDeletethis story remind she of a story from the bible where a man who had everything because of his loyalty to god, but the devil said " this man worships you because you give him everything, take all that away and watch him leave you." so god did slowly take away all of the mans possessions and took away his sons and wife and everything the man owned, but the man stayed faithful. When the devil saw this man truly worshipped god he admitted defeat. As a reward God gave the man back everything and much more....the point of this story the man stayed with god even though god took everything he remained faithful so god rewarded him greatly
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of i movie i saw where a dad gave his heart to his son so he could live.

ReplyDeleteOnce a goat was grazing on the grassy slope of a hill near a stream. It decided to taste the grass on the hills across. A narrow log served as a bridge across the stream. While crossing the bridge, it saw another goat coming from the other side. The bridge was so narrow that only one animal could cross the bridge at a time.
ReplyDeleteThe first goat said to the other, Let me pass first.
You let me pass first, snapped the other goat.
They started threatening each other and finally got into a terrible fight, so savagely that they lost their balance and fell into the stream.
The other goats grazing on the hills saw this spectacle and learnt a lesson.
After few days, two other goats faced the same problem. They happened to be on the bridge at the same time facing each other and unable to move further.
One goat said to the other, "I'll sit down and you can step over my body."
"Thank you. Next time, I'll sit down and let you cross first."
Thus both of them were able to cross the bridge safely.

ReplyDeletereminds me of a kid got rid of his kidney to save his little brother
ReplyDeleteThis story reminded me of sleeping beauty. Silly, but true. In sleeping beauty the evil lady says that the princess will be beautiful and have the ability to sing beautifully. But, at the age of 16 she must fall into an endless sleep unless she is kissed by her true love. So, somewhat similar. (:
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of this movie i saw about a man who jumped in front of a bus to save a child on a bike
ReplyDeleteits like the harry potter quote. "neither can live while the other survives"
ReplyDeleteit reminds me of hercules because he gave up immortality to be with his girlfriend
ReplyDeleteJesus sacrificed himself as the ultimate sacrifice for the worlds sin and if you believe in him you will live with him forever in heaven. Jesus sacrificed his life so that we may live with him forever.

ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of John Q,where his son had a heart problem and needed to get immediate heart surgery but couldn't come up with the money needed so he had to either let him die, or hold the hospital hostage until his son got the surgery.
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of the story of Jacob and Rachel in the bible where Jacob wants to marry Laban's daughter Rachel so he serves 7 years in Laban's feild. After Jacob had served seven years, Laban still would not give Rachel to him, so he served 7 more years and finally was able to marry Rachel.
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of the bible when god gives up his only son to save everyone from sin.
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of another very popular story from the bible, the story of Jesus Christ. He has to give his life for all the sins of the world. THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.
ReplyDeleteThe Pamban Bridge story reminded me of this because it is about a man who works on the bridge were he has to lift the bridge up for big boats and down for trains to go over. Well a boat slowly creeped up while he was lowering it so he had to hurry and lift it back up, his son was coming with his lunch and saw him struggling and he started helping him his finger got caught and his father heard his cries but he sacrificed his son to save the millions of people on the boat and train. after he was done he pulled his son's body parts out of the machine and held them closely to his chest and cried.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of the titanic when rose sacrifices her life to save jack when the ship starts sinking.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of The Good Son. A mom had to sacrifice her son to save her family and her nephew. She did this because throughout the movie the nephew realized that the son killed his baby brother. He told the mother and she did not believe him at first, after the boy tried to kill her she started to believe it. They were at a cliff her son fell and her nephew she was hanging on to both of them then she decided to sacrifice her son.
ReplyDeleteMy dog was diagnosed with cancer in his toes. Soon after that, the cancer spread to his leg. We went to the vet and asked him what we should do, and he said we could either take off his leg, or put him to sleep. After many family discussions, we decided that we didn't want Toby's last years to be filled with pain. Even though it was one of the hardest things to decide on, I'm glad we did, because otherwise, we would've been being selfish.
ReplyDeleteOn My Sisters Keeper the little sister Anna had to make a decision whether to give her kidney to her sister Taylor who is dying, and her sister wants to die so she doesn't have to feel the pain anymore and her parents are trying to make her give her kidney, so she sues them so they can't make her give her kidney away to her sister because she knows her sister wants to die.
ReplyDeleteThis story is similar to a story I've heard of called, "is Your Hut Burning?" Only it has a bit of a happier outcome.
ReplyDeleteThe only survivor of a shipwreck washed up on an uninhabited Island. He prayed and prayed for God to rescue him. Exhausted, he eventually built a hut. The next day he went to gather food and came back to discover that his hut was flaming and on fire. He started screaming at God, "How could you do this to me!"Early the next day he was awakened by an approaching ship. It had come to rescue him. The man asked "How did you know I was here?" And they replied, We saw your smoke signal."
This story shows that the abandoned man had to give up something that was a need in order to be rescued.
This story reminds me of Babe the Blue Ox! Paul Bunyan found Babe and rescues him from freezing in the snow. How sweet
ReplyDeleteAn old woman get stranded on a highway during heavy rain. She waves down a man and he takes her to the nearest town and calls her a cab. Later on a giant tv showed up at his door with a note reading "thank you so much for the ride, i made it to my husband right before he died."

ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of people and how they feel that the world owes them, when it doesn't. Also it reminds of those little stories about caring and helping others and expecting something in return. I found this story A Brother's Ultimate Sacrifice -- A Story of Faith Amidst Suffering.
ReplyDeleteThe movie I Am Legend the man gives his life to save the cure to this vireos and keeps the hope of the world being saved.
ReplyDeleteI think of "Saving Private Ryan" because a small squad of soldiers died trying to save this one private

ReplyDeleteby reading this story you learn that you have to give up something you truly love to either sacrifice for yourself or someone else.

So, she decided it would be best to find new homes for them, and she sacrificed her own wants to give the cats what they most needed.

ReplyDeleteReading this story reminds me of a time when I had to give up something to do another thing in return. ReplyDeletePickup in the Rain
ReplyDeleteOne night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American
Woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway
Trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had
Broken down and she desperately needed a ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.
A young white man stopped to help her, generally
Unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960's. The man
Took her to safety, helped her get assistance and
Put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his
Address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a
Knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a
Giant console color TV was delivered to his home.
A Special note was attached.
It read:
"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway
The other night. The rain drenched not only my
Clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along . . .
Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying
Husband's' bedside just before he passed away . . . God Bless you
for helping me and unselfishly serving others."
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nat King Cole.I found this story.
When I read this story, I thought about Meet The Robinson's, the Disney movie. The movie starts out with Lewis' mother dropping him off on an orphanage stoop. All his life, Lewis i afraid he will not get adopted but when he travels to the future, he realizes that the one that brought him there is his son, Wilbur, who promises to take him to see his mom the day she left him. When he gets close to seeing her, he changes his mind and decides not to, so that way, he can keep his family and let them remain. Lewis sacrifices what he wanted for his family even if they don't technically exist yet.

ReplyDeleteiving ALL
ReplyDeleteMany years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness. The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save
her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed
next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing
the color returning to her cheek. Then his face
grew pale and his smile faded.
He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, "Will I die right away, or how soon?"
The boy had misunderstood the doctor;
he thought he would have to give his sister
all of his blood in order to save her.
This reminds me of the time I had to sacrifice getting a sadies hawkins outfit to get some shoes.
