Another Cross Curriculum Connection
Review the artworks provided on the primitive art page in the Wiki: Ancient Lineage, Too the link is in Moodle. Review the artworks in this section. Select one, and write a brief analysis of its historical and cultural context. For example, what cultural ideas are expressed? What social, political, and environmental themes can you find? Refer to additional resources to help with your analysis.

ReplyDeleteI chose figure eight. It appears to be some type of bird.It is very colorful and is probably something that was worshiped. It could be a symbol for a God.
ReplyDeleteI choose figure four. It is a past king. His face his relaxed so id say he was a very calm person. Supposedly that is where he resided until he was ready to pass on.

ReplyDeleteI choose figure 4 because the lord or king seems to be very noble and collected. In the sculpture they say that the soul or passed life will be transformed into the carving.
ReplyDeleteI chose figure two. It looks as if it was drawn to prepare for a hunt against the animals. They drew it out on caves to take some of that animals energy with them as they hunted.

I choose the Stonehenge: many people believe it was created as either a religious place or some type of observatory.I think that maybe it was just arranged for no reason, it may be some sort of decorative commodity.
ReplyDeleteStonehenge, it is said to be used for religious reasons, but there is also the theory it was used as a Secular Calender. I do not agree with one more than the other but I find it very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI chose Figure 3. It is a depiction of Stonehenge. Although no one knows which culture it belongs to, or what its purpose was, it is an important monument in England.
ReplyDeleteI choose figure 8. It is a eagle used in Teotihuacan murals that are painted on the Teotihuacan temples. probably very sacred and a God.
ReplyDeleteI chose figure two. It is very dramatic with an array of different colors. It features a sort of horse-like figure. It is almost chaotic looking by allowing you to see blood, creatures, and other elements.

I chose the woman of Willendorf. This figure represents the idea of beauty in that time period. She was a fertility sculpture that was carried in the hopes of the gods blessing a man by giving him a child.
ReplyDeleteI chose figure 3, Stonehenge. It is said the it was used as a calendar or for religious reasons. I think it could have been used as a calendar myself.
ReplyDeleteI chose Stonehenge. Stonehenge is said to be some sort of calendar made up of various rocks and giant stones. No one knows where the stones came from, but there are many ideas out there.
ReplyDeletei think the Stonehenge it is supposed to be a spot on the earth with a gravity pull and electronic current going though it and if you hold a rod that the current will pull to it like a magnet.

ReplyDeleteThis is a wooden sculpture of the King. He looks very calm, and seems to be watching over something. He looks stress free, and doesn't look like he has a worry in the world.

I chose figure 5.It looks like the man is a hunter and he is riding some type of animal.
ReplyDeleteIn figure 2 a bull or cow is shown on a cave painting along with a horse and the painter of this work is believed to be hunters who believed painting the animal let them capture part of that animal, so they could easily trap and kill it. The painting is done on stone with brown and red coloring.

ReplyDeleteI chose figure 1, Venus of Elmendorf. This was a figure of a woman with exaggerated breast stomach and lower area. It was a sculpture used for fertility. She was thought of as a "good Luck Charm" for the pregnant wife. Named after Venus- the goddess of love.

ReplyDeleteI chose figure 2. It is a cave drawing of a horse and a bull. They were most likely drawn for a magic ritual in which hunters would preform to weaken the animals in order for them to have an easy hunt.
ReplyDeleteI have figure 5. It is a sculpture of a great leader in a tribe. The leader is ready to go out to hunt. It was probably carved to show that its hunting season and that the tribe needs to get ready.
ReplyDeleteFigure three, Stonehenge, is a mysterious megalithic site, whose exact purpose or creators are unknown. Although not much is known about the previous builders, today it serves as a landmark of sorts to the British people.

I chose figure 5. This piece of art appears to be a soldier because he is riding horseback, with a helmet and holding a spear. This sculpture was probably made as a tribute to a warrior.

I chose it because its a real life picture of how society was and how they built their landscapes and where they lived and etc. Politically speaking, if you look at the two larger stone buildings on the ends in the center, that probably was for someone who was higher up in society in that time.

ReplyDeleteOlmec head. This piece of sculpture was used as a symbol to show off the power and wealth of the tribe. Although there were many heads they all looked similar leading to the idea of a single important individual. However many debate that instead they were sculptures of the heads of those who lost at one of the sacred games and were beheaded, thus that is why there are only heads and not the entire body.

ReplyDeleteThe sculpture, Venus of Willendorf was used as a fertility object. Her parts were enlarged such as her breast, stomach, etc. People believed when you have one, you will have good luck. That is what the people of Willendorf believed.
