Quote of the Week

Drawing is the honesty of art. To draw does not mean simply to reproduce contours: drawing does not consist merely of line. Drawing is also expression, the inner form, the plane and modeling. See what remains after that. Drawing includes three and a half quarters of the content of painting. -- Jean Auguste Ingres Quote

Journal 3: Find a Connection to a Tale from Ghana

Read the short excerpt about the Baule (bah.oo.lay) people of Ghana. This short tells describes the sacrifice which is the origin of the group's name. The name Baule comes from the word baouli means “the child has died.”

For the blog, record a story or tradition from your culture or from others that has something in common with the tale. Do NOT repeat any of the comments. Try to choose something that is unique.

This comes from Ashanti to Zulu: African Traditions by Margaret Musgrove

To the Baule, a crocodile holding a big fish in its mouth is a sacred symbol. A Baule legend tells of a war with the Ashanti (uh.shahnt.ee), another tribe in Ghana. The Ashanti had chased the Baule to a deep river. There was no bridge, so the Baule asked the crocodiles to help them across. The crocodiles agreed, but in return they demanded the most precious thing the Baule people had. Tearfully the queen gave them her only son. Then the crocodiles lined up side by side in the water, and the Baule walked across their backs to safety.

  1. I read this story and I thought about Rumpelstiltskin and how he was willing to help the Miller's daughter spin straw into gold but only in exchange for something in return. At first it was trinkets, rings and bracelets and then finally he asked the girl for her unborn child. Later he demanded that the "contract" be fulfilled.

When Eli Estrada found $140,000 in unmarked bills sitting in the middle of the road, he thought he was rich. “That’s just your first reaction,” Estrada tells the Los Angeles Times, “but it’s not yours, and you feel nervous… like you did something wrong.” So the 40-year-old landscaper, deep in debt and supporting his mother, took the money directly to police.

Authorities were flabbergasted. “I've had people come to me with purses and wallets with cash in it and they'll turn it in,” said a police spokesman. “But not like this.” Estrada didn’t even ask for a reward, though the bank that lost the money eventually gave him $2,000. “They should have given him 10%,” says his mother

It's where 3 brothers were trying to cross a bridge to get to the other side. But "death" was in their way and wouldn't let them through. So in short, the brothers had made a bargain, or trade, with death. Two of the three brothers ended up being killed because of the bargain they made with death. The third brother however, gave his bargain along to his son, and then the brother ended up dying happily so his son could go through life happily as he once had.

As a reward God gave the man back everything and much more....the point of this story the man stayed with god even though god took everything he remained faithful so god rewarded him greatly

  38. Once a goat was grazing on the grassy slope of a hill near a stream. It decided to taste the grass on the hills across. A narrow log served as a bridge across the stream. While crossing the bridge, it saw another goat coming from the other side. The bridge was so narrow that only one animal could cross the bridge at a time.

The first goat said to the other, Let me pass first.

You let me pass first, snapped the other goat.

They started threatening each other and finally got into a terrible fight, so savagely that they lost their balance and fell into the stream.

The other goats grazing on the hills saw this spectacle and learnt a lesson.

After few days, two other goats faced the same problem. They happened to be on the bridge at the same time facing each other and unable to move further.

One goat said to the other, "I'll sit down and you can step over my body."

"Thank you. Next time, I'll sit down and let you cross first."

Thus both of them were able to cross the bridge safely.

We went to the vet and asked him what we should do, and he said we could either take off his leg, or put him to sleep. 56. This story is similar to a story I've heard of called, "is Your Hut Burning?" Only it has a bit of a happier outcome.

The only survivor of a shipwreck washed up on an uninhabited Island. He prayed and prayed for God to rescue him. Exhausted, he eventually built a hut. The next day he went to gather food and came back to discover that his hut was flaming and on fire. He started screaming at God, "How could you do this to me!"Early the next day he was awakened by an approaching ship. It had come to rescue him. The man asked "How did you know I was here?" And they replied, We saw your smoke signal."

This story shows that the abandoned man had to give up something that was a need in order to be rescued.

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American
Woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway
Trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had
Broken down and she desperately needed a ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.
A young white man stopped to help her, generally
Unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960's. The man
Took her to safety, helped her get assistance and
    Put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his
Address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a
Knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a
Giant console color TV was delivered to his home.
    A Special note was attached.
    It read:
"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway
The other night. The rain drenched not only my
Clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along . . .
Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying
Husband's' bedside just before he passed away . . . God Bless you
for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

  115. This reminds me of a movie I watched. It was about a girl who gave up her life for her sister because she needed a blood transfusion from someone in her family quickly and no one else was willing to do it.

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease.   Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness.   The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save
her."   As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed
next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing
the color returning to her cheek.   Then his face
grew pale and his smile faded.
He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, "Will I die right away, or how soon?"
    The boy had misunderstood the doctor;
he thought he would have to give his sister
all of his blood in order to save her.
