Quote of the Week

Drawing is the honesty of art. To draw does not mean simply to reproduce contours: drawing does not consist merely of line. Drawing is also expression, the inner form, the plane and modeling. See what remains after that. Drawing includes three and a half quarters of the content of painting. -- Jean Auguste Ingres Quote

What Do You Think - Opera

Watch the clip (linked below) from the famous movie "Pretty Woman." Julia Roberts character, Vivian, has a rough background and has never before experienced the opera. Richard Gere's character, who is very cultured, takes her the opera and explains "You either love it or hate it." He also explains that despite the opera being in a language other than English, he believes Vivian will understand it anyway. After you've watched the clip, leave me a comment telling me what you thought; did you enjoy the clip? do you think you would enjoy opera at all? What do you think of the way they dressed for the performance? You don't have to answer all these questions. Any intelligent, appropriate comment is appreciated.

(Oh, and the opera part of the clip really starts at about the 2min30second mark, if you need to fast forward.)

  2. I love that part of the movie where the power of the opera hits her and she falls in love with it. I have actually been to an opera before and even though I'm a teenager I loved it. It was one of my favorite things I'v ever done. I thought for the time peroid and event they were dressed apropriatly. You don't go to an opera dressed in jeans.

  5. I thought it was nice and the woman singing was really great because she hitting the high notes with ease and didn't have to struggle. I probably wouldn't enjoy opera because i find it to be boring sometimes

  6. I find opera annoying in a way. It gets boring with all the singing. She's good at what she does though.

  7. I do not consider opera to be very enjoyable, but in a way its annoying. The music is talent, but something I am not interested in. The women was very talented she was able to hit many high notes.

  10. I dont like opera at all. The singing is pretty, but can get annoying. I would never dress the way they do, but it is very proper and sometimes beautiful. I think it is cool tho that they can hit all those high notes, especially in a different language.

  11. It was beautiful, but now i kinda understand a family guy episode now cause they did a reference to this move.

  12. I personally do not enjoy opera, in that i do not understand what they are saying because of it being in a different language and also that the words are drawn out to almost just sound when it falls upon my ears. I do have to admit the woman singing in this clip was extremely talented with her ability to be able to hit the high notes just right. For now I'll stick with orchestras and modern music performances rather than operas.

  13. i think it was pretty much the same as high school musical but in a new language, so i hate it.

  15. Opera is not enjoyable to me. You can't understand it.

  16. I don't mind opera. I think it can be really pretty. I prefer to be able to understand it, but I think that you can understand the emotions by their tone of voice when they sing.

  17. I really didn't like the clip and I don't really like opera.

  18. I don't think I would enjoy an opera. Yes, the singing is very beautiful, but I'm not a fan of loud stuff and plus I can't understand what is being said.

  19. i enjoy the clip, i find it romantic, but i dont really like opera because it sounds like just a bunch of run-together noise and screaming.

  20. The acting was alright but i couldnt sit there and listen to them yelling

  21. Hearing music sung on a tape or video is not the same thing as seeing it in public. When you see an actor cry or someone hold a dead child or when you feel the floor and wall vibrant at a concert for me it changes my reaction. It becomes more real sympathy becomes empathy. You get caught up in the energy. La Boheme is the only opera that I ever saw. The words were translated in English on a big screen beside the stage and since I have nothing to compare it to I do not know if would help. I would go again. I've watch Turandot it's like a fairy tale on PBS and it was one of the most beautiful stories that I had ever heard. The music alone kept me watching.

  22. I liked the clip, it was cute. but i don't think i could handle opera for a long period of time. It would just give me a headache.

  23. I think going to see an Opera in person would be an amazing experience but it definitely wouldn't be something I would just listen to for fun.

  24. I liked the woman's (Julia Roberts) dress. I don't like opera, personally. It takes a great deal of talent, I'll give it that.

  25. Her voice seem like perfect, or maybe its just Opera not rally into it but, the people that do it is good at it.#LMS

  26. Like my fellow classmates said, i have no clue what she is singing. But she is really talented. Although, Pretty Woman is actually a good film.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't really like it that much because it's nothing but loud people basically screaming/shouting at the top of their lungs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really don't like opera. It's not a appealing kind of music i like or like to sing. I mean she sounds good, but some people can sing like that and some cant.

  29. Honestly, I don't find the over the top singing appealing. Its just the genre that gets to me, I could see these singers excelling at musicals. Those are much more appealing to me; I just cant get into the opera, like i could a play, or a musical. Singing everything is REALY annoying...

  30. I like the opera and in my opinion if it was in English, it would lose some of it's value. i don't think it would be as full of emotion or such a beautiful tone. it just wouldn't be the same.

  31. Opera is okay if it's in English. If it's in a any different language I don't think I could handle it. The constant singing is rather annoying.

  32. I don't find opera appealing. It gave me a headache.

  33. I find opera to be a powerful thing, but only whenever it's seen in person. Even if you don't understand the words, you're able to understand the emotions of the words, and it's not too hard to figure out what's going on. The opera I saw had English words on a screen to the side of the stage, but I found it more fulfilling to ignore the translations and to just watch and listen.

  34. I don't really like Opera, but as stated in the clip, I do appreciate it. It's a beautiful combination of music, singing, and acting, but I don't care much for it. And the costumes (despite being unrealistic) add to the over-the-top theme of the entire performance.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Even if the singing is hard to understand, despite the fact that it's not in English, I think it might be something I would enjoy but seeing a full opera would probably better help my opinion. To me though the style of the opera actors didn't seem over the top that much, but this was a modern version so that might be why.

  39. I've never liked opera. It didn't amuse me whatsoever. The way they dressed was really annoying, that's what people dressed like in the 1800s, and I don't like it honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I dont enjoy opera. I believe it contradicts itself how the vocals are loud and exciting but the movements are usually slow and lovey dovey.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I enjoyed the opera very much. I think that they were dressed appropriately for the time period. I love listening to music like that even though I dont know what they are saying it is still easy to follow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I honestly don't think opera is that bad, i don't like but i don't hate it. It sounds beautiful thought but i prefer opera in English.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't enjoy opera because it is a u like or don't like type of art. The way they dress is like somt hing for Romeo and Juliet.

  47. i think opera singers have a nice voice and that they tell a story every time.

  48. I think Opera can be appealing but to me it all depends on who the artist is and what piece of music they are singing. In some movies the opera is not appealing in any way only appealing if its live.

  49. The clip is great, as always.

I can see why opera is an art form, but it just really is not my cup of tea. I like my eardrums in tact, thank you very much. It is very dramatic and ornate, which fits well with the Baroque period. It's just not my thing, however beautiful.

  54. I thought the opera was interesting, I'm not sure how long I could listen to it and enjoy it, but initially it seems alright. I think that they were dressed appropriately for an event that is obviously formal.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The opera would be understandable because when they sing their voices go up and down to show dramatic affects. They also have senses and play out what is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I really enjoyed listening to the opera. I think it would be very fun to go see a opera live and even better if you knew the story the opera is being sung about.

  63. I love the opera! It doesn't matter if it's in a different language, because the singing is beautiful and their motions or movement can show what they are doing. I wish I had the voice to sing in a opera.

  68. Opera definitely isn't my favorite style of music, but I really do enjoy it. I would love to watch someone train for opera, purely for the intensity. It is not something that everyone can do and it is very difficult. I have always wanted the skill to sing that high of a soprano part, but sadly, Altos like me don't get that chance.

  77. I did enjoy the clip of this movie, however i'll be darned if I enjoy Opera. I'm not into the whole "let's see how high and loud and long we can hold out our voices and call it singing" type of thing. I believe that if everyone sang like me, the world would be a much better, happier place.
